History

When the gigantic retail offices of Sears, Roebuck & Company decided to consolidate their Chicagoland offices in 1969 they were confronted with an awesome problem – in order to house the thousands of employees currently scattered throughout the city they would need nearly 3 million square feet of office and conference space! This staggering demand for space required that the building features a variety of floor levels, setups and designs, creating an ambitious project for the architects of Skidmore, Owings & Merill. With over 100 floors (a construction cap was set at 108 floors by the Federal Aviation Administration thanks in order to protect air traffic!), the Sears Tower would quickly surpass the then unfinished World Trade Center Towers as the world’s tallest building, standing near 1,450 feet and 7 inches (1,729 feet including the local television antenna). Construction on the building began in April 1971 and was completed just 2 years later with a modern day price tag of nearly $950 million. Sears recently vacated the building in 1993, moving to their new office headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. There have been several different tenants in the building since.

A Top-Notch Tourist Attraction

Chicago Exotic Car Rentals highly encourages its customers to visit the Sears Tower during their upcoming exotic car rental Chicago vacation as it offers travelers a unique array of first-class tourist attractions. From the fine architectural design to the stunning cityscape views, the Sears Tower simply can’t be beat when it comes to fantastic fun! Exotic car rental Chicago customers are highly encouraged to visit the visitors section of the building, as well as the building’s world-famous Skydeck observation level located on the buildings 103rd floor. Tourists to the site are invited to experience The Windy City at a height of nearly 1,353 feet, all while enjoying views of the great plains of Illinois and Lake Michigan. Customers of Chicago Exotic Car Rentals can excess the Skydeck from the building’s visitor entrance on Jackson Boulevard.

The Sears Tower is currently the tallest office building in the United States when measured from the sidewalk of the main entrance to the top of the broadcast antenna. The buildings rein is expected to end in the near future though, thanks to the new Freedom Tower complex that is currently in the works for New York City. A new building in Chicago named the Fordham Spire is also expected to surpass the Sears Tower in 2009, along with the Burj Dubai construction project currently underway in Dubai.

Sears Tower Trivia

  • In 1999 French urban climber Alain Robert (also known as “Spiderman”) scaled the Sears Tower from top to bottom using nothing but his bare hands.
  • The Sears Tower is built on a six inch lean thanks to a slightly asymmetrical design that places unequal loads on the buildings foundation.
  • The Sears Tower is the highest point in Illinois. The roof rests approximately 2030 feet above sea level, assuming that the ground it is built on is already 580 above sea level.
